FOX Wins Demo by a Heir as CBS Leads Tuesday

While high profile debuts on NBC and ABC failed to spark immediate interest, FOX may have a new reality hit on its hands. FOX used the strong premiere of "The Simple Life" to capture the demographic win, but CBS still carried the night.
Overall, CBS averaged an 8.6 rating/13 share for the evening, with NBC taking second at 7.5/12. FOX moved up to third with a 6.6/10 for the evening, which ABC came in fourth at 6.4/10. The WB had a slim edge for fifth with a 2.1/3, just beating UPN's 1.9/3.
Among adults 18-49, FOX posted a 4.5 rating to capture the demographic that advertisers crave. NBC was a close second at 4.3, beating third place ABC's 3.9 rating. CBS was fourth at 3.4. UPN moved up to fifth with a 1.2 rating, better than The WB's 1.0.
CBS began the night in first with "JAG," which pulled down an 8.9/10. ABC had a slim advantage for second in total viewers with "A Charlie Brown Christmas," but FOX was in a dead heat with "That 70s Show" (5.1/8) and the impressive 8.1/12 debut for "The Simple Life" (the Paris Hilton-Nicole Richie reality entry was also the night's highest rated program among adults 18-49). NBC's premiere of "The Tracy Morgan Show" was good only for fourth on the hour as the premiere took a decent 6.3/10, followed by a so-so 5.7/9 for a second original episode. On The WB, "Gilmore Girls" had a 2.4/4 for the hour to just beat "One on One" and "All of Us" on UPN.
At 9 p.m., CBS stayed in the lead with the 8.4/13 first hour of the movie "Miss Congeniality." NBC moved up to second the 6.8/10 average of "Frasier" and "Happy Family," pushing FOX's "24" (6.7/10) to third (though the FOX drama had a lead in total viewers) . ABC was fourth with "According to Jim" and "Less than Perfect." "Rock Me Baby" and "Half & Half" averaged a 1.8/3 to give UPN a slight advantage over The WB's "One Tree Hill."
NBC moved into the lead for the 10 p.m. hour as "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" was the night's highest rated program with a 9.6/16. CBS held onto second with the conclusion of "Miss Congeniality." The new ABC drama "Line of Fire" premiered to a 6.2/10, not that far off the 7.0/11 averaged by "NYPD Blue" in the same time slot this season.
